Long ago, there was a powerful demon named Sindhu, who had received a boon of immortality. But it came with a condition — he had to keep a special nectar of life (Amrit) safely locked inside his body, sealed in a jar in his stomach. As long as that jar remained untouched, he could not be killed.
With this power, Sindhu became arrogant and began troubling sages, gods, and innocent people. He believed no one could ever defeat him.

Seeing this, the gods prayed to Goddess Parvati for help.

Moved by their pain, Parvati asked Ganesh to help them. Ganesh took on a radiant form and was given a peacock as his vahana. The peacock in this context represents majestic power, agility and splendor, suitable for this warrior avatar of Ganesh.

After a long and intense battle, Ganesh struck Sindhu down, he split open his stomach, broke the pot of Amrit, and finally brought an end to Sindhu’s tyranny.

From that day on, Ganesh came to be known as "Mayureshwar" - the peacock-riding Ganesh. The temple of Mayureshwar, nestled in Morgaon, Maharashtra, is the first and most important shrine among the Ashtavinayak circuit. It is said that all pilgrimages to Ganesh begin and end there, completing a sacred circle of blessings.
