The Story

After the great war of Mahabharat, the Pandavs - victorious but burdened with guilt - sought to atone for the bloodshed of war. They were advised that only Mahadev could grant them liberation from their karmic debt.

So they set out in search of Mahadev.

But Shiv, aware of their approach and their desire for forgiveness, did not wish to be found so easily. He disguised himself as a bull (Nandi form) and disappeared into the Himalayas.

The Pandavs searched far and wide until they reached Kedarkhand - the region now known as Uttarakhand. There, Bheem, the strongest among them, spotted a mysterious bull grazing in the fields. Sensing something divine, he rushed to grab it. The bull tried to escape - and in the struggle, its body vanished into the earth.

But Bheem got hold on the hump which remained above ground — and that is the spot where the sacred temple of Kedarnath stands today.

Along with the Hump, the different parts of Shiv's bull form emerged in five locations, known as the Panch Kedar:
 1. Kedarnath - the hump
 2. Tungnath - the arms
 3. Rudranath - the face
 4. Madhyamaheshwar - the stomach
 5. Kalpeshwar - the matted hair (jata)

The Pandavs, awakened and built temples at all five spots. Har Har Kedar!
