
Flame of Kolhapur
Dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi, this temple is believed to be one of the Shakti Peethas where the eyes of Sati fell.
According to Bhagvat Puran, Mahalakshmi once separated from Lord Vishnu after a disagreement. She came to Kolhapur, vowing to stay here until Vishnu came for her. It is said that even today Vishnu, in his Venkateswara form, visits her every evening from Tirupati - passing through the Paschim Dwar (Western Gate) of the temple.
History:
Built in the 7th century by Chalukya rulers, the temple was further developed by various dynasties over centuries.
