The Bloodline of Creation

When Sati immolated herself, Shiv roamed the cosmos in grief. As her body was disintegrated by Vishnu's Sudarshan Chakra, her womb and yoni fell on the Nilachal Hill in Assam -becoming the powerful Shakti Peetha known as Kamakhya, the source of all creation.
As per Devi Puran, the demon king Narakasura, infatuated by her power, sought to marry her. Kamakhya, unwilling, set a challenge: he must build a staircase from the foothills to the temple before dawn. As he neared completion, the goddess tricked him by imitating the crowing of a rooster, signaling daybreak. Enraged by his failure, Narakasura turned violent. In her wrathful form, Kamakhya destroyed him, restoring peace to the realm.
Every year, during the Ambubachi Mela, the temple closes for three days - marking the goddess’s menstruation, a sacred event celebrating creation, and feminine divinity.
