Protector of Animals & Us

Long ago, Shiv chose to abandon Mount Kailash to live quietly among mortals - in the form of a deer - in the forests of what is now Kathmandu. The gods searched for him far and wide. When they found him here, Shiva refused to return. It was only when Vishnu, Brahma, and others forced him back that he left his deer form behind - and that very spot became sacred.
Thus was born Pashupatinath - "Lord of the Animals"
